Music Courses
Stevenson University offers a limited number of courses in Music for students interested in learning about music or participating in musical groups at the University. Courses also fulfill the Core Curriculum Requirement in Fine Arts. There is no major or minor in Music at Stevenson. Course descriptions for Music are listed below:
MUS 102
Chorus
Instruction in the fundamentals of tone production, sightreading, and diction. Laboratory practice for acquiring techniques and skills in singing. Song materials selected to illustrate the range of vocal variety, problems, and possibilities of artistic performance. Three hours a week. Both semesters. Two credits per semester. Orchestra
For students with a background in instrumental music. Exposes students to a variety of musical styles and historical periods. Repertoire based on performance levels and instrumentation. Students must own or have access to an instrument and possess basic playing techniques. Three hours a week. Both semesters. Two credits per semester. Introduction to Music in History
Explores musical styles in history from Gregorian chant to jazz and contemporary music. Students are exposed to a variety of musical styles through the use of CDs and live performances. Three credits. (17 Nov 2006)
MUS 310
Musical Thought: Sound & Ideas
Studies music and musicians and the ideas that shaped their development from the 18th century to the concert hall of today. Examines composers and compositions that represent important points of thought in the context of the time and circumstances surrounding them. Class attends three to four live concerts. World Music Traditions
An examination and comparison of musical traditions and aesthetics of diverse cultures, with a discussion of both the sacred and social roles that music plays in each society.
