Religion Courses

There is no major in Religion at Stevenson University; however, students interested in pursing this field of study may do so either by taking a minor in Religion or through creating a focus in Religion within Interdisciplinary Studies. Course descriptions for Religion are listed below:

REL 116
Survey of the New Testament

Introduces the literature of the New Testament, with appropriate emphasis given to the background, growth, and thematic content of the biblical materials. Alternate spring semesters. Three credits. (27 Nov 2006)

REL 202
Patterns of Thought-Religion

Surveys selected living religions and their practices and thoughts that have had major influence on the development of worldviews. Examines the impact religion has on certain aspects of our lives, such as politics, history, literature, and the arts. The course also seeks to provide the critical tools needed to determine and to evaluate religious influences. Prerequisite: ENG 151. Three credits. It is strongly recommended that students take this course after the freshman year. (27 Nov 2006)

REL 275
Topics in Religion

This course will offer a variety of topics from among the world's religions. Topics may include The Early Church in Christianity; Influential Religious Figures; Classics of Religious Devotion; New Religious Movements; Sex, Gender, and Religion; Issues of Ethics and Morality; and Issues in Christian Theology. The course will allow students the opportunity to look at contemporary as well as past events that shape world religions and influence society. Prerequisite: ENG 151. Three credits. Comparative Religious Thought

Explores and compares specific religious issues, such as salvation, creation, God, life/death, sex/sexuality, woman/ man, rites of passage in selected world religions. Prerequisite: Third year status or permission of the instructor. Three credits. (27 Nov 2006)

REL 303
Contemporary Religion-America

Studies contemporary religious expressions in America. Examines origins, development, and current status of both "mainline" and peripheral movements, with discussions on attendant problems of national interest. Prerequisite: Third year status or permission of the instructor. Three credits. (27 Nov 2006)

REL 310
Jesus of Nazareth

Studies the founder of Christianity, with attention given to the historical and social setting. Analyzes the portraits of Jesus presented in the four canonical gospels, as well as his impact on the subsequent history of culture. Prerequisite: Third year status or permission of the instructor. REL 405
Seminar in Western Religion

Provides a comparative study of the three major Western religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) as well as an indepth examination of their historical development and resulting implications for contemporary economic, social and political issues. Topics may include the contemporary Middle East, Fundamentalist expressions, or scriptural studies. Prerequisite: Third year status or permission of the instructor. Three credits. (27 Nov 2006)
