EDUCATION
B.F.A., Maryland Institute, College of Art
M.A., Ph.D., College of William and Mary
Alex Boulton received his Ph.D. in History from the College of William and Mary in 1991. He also has degrees in American Studies and in Art. He teaches classes in U.S. and World History, African American History, the History of the Family, Public History, Historiography, and Thomas Jefferson. He is the author of a biography on Frank Lloyd Wright, and has written and photographed articles on American architecture for American Heritage Magazine, and written articles on early American ideas of race for American Quarterly and The William and Mary Quarterly. He is currently writing a book on ideas on race in the early Republic.
He has also worked on archaeological sites at Colonia Williamsburg and Monticello.
His major areas of interest are in Public History, Cultural History, African American History, and the colonial and early national periods in the United States. He is a member of the Vernacular Architectural Forum, the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture, the American Historical Association, and the Historical Society. He is a member of the Villa Julie Diversity Committee, and has been active in the Baltimore-based Inter-faith Action for Racial Justice, and is a trained facilitator of inter-racial dialogue study circles.
