EDUCATION
B.A., M.A.T., Emory University

Teaching Interests: Baltimore history, writing from historical sources, history and computers, service learning, interactive web development.

Teaching Philosophy: Life is a seamless web, or so thought the ancients. Our thoughts, memories and desires, our actions and physical natures, our experience of home, work, and community are all connected in obvious and not-so-obvious ways. A successful teacher can help students identify and use these connections to make sense of their learning and, of course, their lives.

But teaching has less to do with philosophy, perhaps, then with engineering. Teaching is mostly a process of "figuring out:" figuring out what the student needs to know and what might stand in the way of knowing; figuring out ways to help each student get the job done. When all is said and done, learning a messy, recursive process, and the responsibility and rewards belong to the student.

"Epur si muove:" Galileo supposedly muttered these words after he was forced by the Church to recant his position on the centrality of the sun in the solar system. The words mean "and yet it does move." We can deny but not alter truth.
