EDUCATION
B.A., Harvard University
M.A., Yale University
M.F.A., Tisch School of the Arts, New York University
After graduating from Harvard with a B.A. in Russian Literature and Language, Chris Reed taught Russian and French at two different New England boarding schools. In between the two teaching gigs, he went back to school, himself, and received his Master's, from Yale, in Russian and East European Studies. At Yale, he focused on Russian film, and the films of Andrei Tarkovsky, in particular.
After his fourth year as a high school language teacher, Chris left to travel the world as an international tour leader, applying to film schools at the same time. Since receiving his M.F.A. from the Graduate Film program at N.Y.U., Chris has worked as both a narrative and documentary filmmaker.
Chris has directed a number of films, including Divinity, Nail Polish, Taryn Murphy (a documentary about a quirky Baltimore family struggling with illness), and All About George (winner of many awards at film festivals. He has also worked on numerous other projects as producer, director of photography, assistant director, gaffer, sound recordist, assistant camera, and editor.
Chris's feature credits include Spread Eagles (2005, JoDa Hodge), on which he was the DP (shot on HD), and Pagans (2003, Jamie Yerkes), on which he was the editor.
Chris has also worked as an actor, and you can see him on the Independent Film Channel in Colorforms and Confection, and on Sesame Street in Alphabet Pam (P is for Pizza).
Chris has taught for a variety of film schools, including the New York Film Academy and the School of Cinema and Performing Arts (of which he is a founding faculty member), and has been an Adjunct Professor in the Theater, Film & Dance Department at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, and at the Art Institute of New York City. From September, 2003, to August, 2005, Chris was the Director of Media Arts at Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School (LREI) in Manhattan.
Chris is currently at work fundraising for his next film, Out All Night, a feature-length exploration of male-female romantic relationships and their crisis points, which he will co-direct with his New York-based writing partner, Sunny Turner.
Chris grew up in Baltimore, graduating from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute (Poly) in 1986. After 20 years away, he is very excited to be back, and is enjoying himself immensely here at Villa Julie.
