EDUCATION
B.A., M.A., Ph.D., The Johns Hopkins University
Ellen Roskes received her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Johns Hopkins University. Her thesis focused on developing new methodology for the construction of cyclohexanones and its application in the synthesis of (+/-)-b-vetivone, a perfume used in cosmetics and soaps. In addition, during her graduate study, she developed a novel dehydration procedure. Subsequently, Dr. Roskes completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Oncology Center of the Johns Hopkins Medical School. She applied her synthetic organic chemistry background to the study of anticancer pharmaceutical agents, with special emphasis on cyclophosphamide. Current research interests include the synthesis of analogs of anticancer pharmaceuticals, and dehydration reactions.
Since coming to Villa Julie College in 1996, Dr. Roskes has taught a variety of courses in the Chemistry Department, including General Chemistry, Honors General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Advanced Organic Chemistry, Independent Research and Senior Research Projects. In 2002, Dr. Roskes was named Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Physical Sciences.
