Dr. Suggs, Professor of Music, directs the Music program at Villa Julie. He has over 35 years of professional performance experience. Prior to coming to VJC in 1994, he played trumpet in the Annapolis Brass Quintet for 19 years. With the quintet, he performed on tour in all 50 states and 20 foreign countries: in Europe, Asia, North Africa, and Central America. He played on 15 commercial recordings with the ABQ, two in collaboration with the late jazz guitar legend Charlie Byrd. He also make a recording with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He has performed on televised broadcasts in New York, Washington, DC, Spain, Egypt, Norway, the Netherlands, India, the Philippines, Tunisia, and Maryland Public Television. He was featured soloist with the Smithsonian Chamber Orchestra in a national CBS Christmas Eve telecast from the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. He spent three years with the United States Army Band in Washington where he was a solist with the Concert Band and performed with the Army Brass Quintet, Chamber Orchestra and Herald Trumpets.
He remains active as a recitalist and free-lance trumpet player with such groups as the Baltimore and National Symphonies, the Kennedy Center and National Symphonies, the Kennedy Center and National Gallery Orchestras, Baltimore Opera, Handel Choir, Theater Chamber Players, and the Chamber Ensemble of Notre Dame.
He has a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Wichita State University, Master of Music from Catholic University of America, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Maryland College Park.
