Donna Swope has been involved in nursing education since 1970; she has taught in diploma and baccalaureate nursing programs, with a specialty focus on nursing leadership and obstetrics. She is certified in Inpatient Obstetrical Nursing. Prior to coming to Villa Julie College in 1994, she spent eight years as a maternal-child health clinical nurse specialist; as such, she wrote standards of care for obstetrical and neonatal nurses and mentored 150 nursing staff in the meeting of professional goals.

Ms. Swope has special clinical interests in pain management and breastfeeding. She is a certified lactation consultant and was a co-editor for the Maryland Breastfeeding Promotion Project's publication, Lactation Management. In that resource manual, she authored the unit on "Workplace Management of Lactation Issues"; she designed and implemented a breast milk pumping room for employees at her workplace. Ms. Swope is the author of the position statement of her professional organization, The Association for Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, regarding breastfeeding as the preferred method of infant nutrition.

Ms. Swope earned a diploma in nursing from the Church Home and Hospital School of Nursing, where she was awarded the William Topping Watson award for "Excellence in the Art, Science, and Spirit of Nursing", and a bachelor's and master's degree in nursing from the University of Maryland, where she earned the Maternal and Child Health Excellence in Nursing award. Ms. Swope has been a long-time member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and has served the Villa Julie College chapter, Rho Epsilon, as Faculty Counselor 2000-2002, President-elect 2001-2002, and President 2002-2004. She is a member of the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses.
