EDUCATION

My name is Exsul Van Helden. I am a native of the Netherlands, and earned my Doctorandus in Sociology from the University of Amsterdam. Early in my career I worked with and studies cultural minorities in Europe and Central and South America, while using my 35mm still camera and trying to capture life in these different cultures. Following this fieldwork, I joined the Amsterdam City Journal, a Dutch Filmcollective, where I began my first effort to address social issues with the use of film. Topics included health care centers in Amsterdam and the process of growing older.
